SORRY FOR PERSON WHO ARE LOVED BEST – SEPIA 28/03/2009

ABSTRACT- Sepia officinalis is commonly known as Cuttlefish. Found mainly in the Mediterranean sea. Parts used-pure pigments in the ink. Cuttlefish ink has long been used as a pigment in artists paints. Medicinally, it was used in ancient time to treat Gonorrhoea & Kidney stones. Hahnemann published details about the homoeopathic remedy in 1834. He proved the remedy after observing that an artist friend who licked his sepia-soaked paint brush frequently developed an obscure illess, which was caused by the ink. It is an excellent remedy for women’s complaints. Dr.Gibson Miller has stated that if he were allowed to keep only one drug, he would choose Sepia .Margaret Tyler with Sepia marvelous insight calls it a washerwoman’s remedy.

       One day I was deeply absorbed in NJH in my clinic. After few minutes, a lady came with her husband. As soon as I looked at her & I remembered the constitution of Sepia that was exactly the same as I had been taught by my great teacher Dr. S.C.Mishra Sir who wants every of his student become a good homoeopath. Suddenly, I was lost in the memories of that class. My chain of thought was broken by her husband- Doctor!! Where are you? May we sit? I say Yes-Yes, please. Then her husband asked me ,- do you remember me? I answered, Yes you are Mr & Mrs “Sepia ”

& how are you? He replied- not all well. I am suffering from diarrhea continuously for over five years. On enquiry he gave a history that the disorder had started after his marriage when he  had taken some strongly boiled milk & soon had an urge for stool. Being in the midst of the marriage ceremony, he had controlled the urge. But from the next day he had developed the diarrhea which had persisted so long. Now condylomata surround head of his panis. URINE THICK FOUL, ADHERENT RED SANDY SENDIMENT. Heavy bearing down feeling in his hypogastrium.  Naturally, he had consulted numerous physicians but had found no relief.

       I saw Mr. & Mrs. Sepia, both are tall & lean with slim hips, dark hair & brown eyes. Pigmentation across their nose & cheeks can result in a yellow-brown “SADDLE”. Mrs. Sepia is attractive & elegant, with an angular, slightly masculine appearance. She look downcast & sit with their legs crossed (because of a weak feeling in the pelvic area). Her “Tell Tale Face” indicates the internal derangement with MALE TYPE OF PELVIC. On further enquiry she gave her complaints as follows:-After marriage she was active but gradually becomes less & less active interested in sex. Now, inspite of  her strong sexual desire, she has aversion to coition due to pain during intercourse & feel exhausted afterward & as such she does not enjoy intercourse.(That is why Boger describes the Sepia patient as “ miserable”). Anything to do with sexual matters makes her feel nauseous. Her husband wants sex and finally she pretends. She does not like mixing with friends whom she actually wants; rather she desire company of some unknown person.(Wants company but no friends-Adolph Lippe). She has a very distinct aversion to men & persons whom she loves best, but she can’t help herself appreciating their company. (It is somewhat like Lycopodium who does not want company in his room but wishes somebody should be there in the next room so that he feels that he is not alone).

      She loses her husband (or children) whereas formerly she loved them dearly. Pelvic viscera are attached by their ligaments to the posterior wall of the abdomen or the back and also the fact that all the ligaments supporting the vertebral column become relaxed & resulted like her elder sister Mrs. Murex, she has sensation of something from coming out of the vagina (DRAGGING OR BEARING DOWN SENSATION) & to prevent falling down sensation, she sit close & crossed their legs tightly together. ( Lillium tigrinum feels her uterus or whole of the abdominal viscera is coming down & when standing or walking puts her hands on the vulva and presses it up in order to prevent protrusion).

      Mentally she is irritable, angry, impatient, and intolerant of contradiction, suspicious, indifferent, and confused. She weeps while telling her symptoms (like Pulsatilla). Any attempt to console her aggravates & starts a fresh flow of tears. She has had tendency to abortion from 5^th to 7^th month. Abortion seems to produce a kind of serious disturbance in her health. (Schmidt writes,’ Sepia is uses as a preventive medicine for habitual esp. 7^th month abortion). I know all of you interested to know much more about Sepia. So please continue….

     The menses are usually late and scanty & of short duration (one or two days), and often flow only in the morning. In occasional instances they are early & profuse. There is pain from back to front. Great irritability during menses. Mania from profuse menses. Metrorrhagia at the time of climaxis. The flow is accompanied by empty feeling in the epigastrium, hot flushes, shuddering, general coldness & icy cold feet. Leucorrhea, yellow, greenish, in large lumps, in little girls, instead of menses, with stitches up in vagina from uterus to naval with much itching.

      Sepia produces a general venous congestion. This is most marked in the portal system. Due to congestion, uterus displaced backwards & press upon the rectum & produce a sensation of a BALL or WEIGHT in the rectum or a frequent sensation for stool (cf. Nux-v). So that the patient goes & strains without result & only succeeds in adding to her discomfort by increasing the congestion.. Uterus also may press upon the bladder and provoke frequent urging for micturation. Sepia has ‘painful sensation of emptiness, goneness or faintness’ (also – Ignatia & Hydrastis canadensis) in connection with uterine symptom. Tongue white coated & bitter taste in the mouth with longing for acids or pickles which seem to relieve those symptoms. She often has nausea at the sight, smell or even at the thought of food (cf. Hyperemesis gravidarum). There are both < & > from eating. The periodicity of Sepia in headache & other complaints (eg. paroxysms of malarial fever) which recur regularly every twenty-eight days.

    Sepia child- Sallow, sweaty skin. Chily & sensitive to changes in the weather. Nervous and dislikes being alone. Dislikes parties, but if forced to makes an effort will come alive, particularly if there is dancing. Tends to be  constipated. Incontinence of urine during first  sleep from which the child is roused with difficulty (also Kreos.).Skin –Blotched, boils in axilla. Ringworm < every  spring. Urticaria < open air > warm room. Thick crusts from upon the joints. Fever- Easily chilled. Chilly with air hunger. Cold, in spots, on vertex, between scapulae, feet, in bed.

►“Pulsatilla and Sepia often resemble each other, both being very touchy, but the Sepia patient                                   

      does not break down or weep so easily. Pulsatilla seems to be needed more by the immature,  

      adolescent, sensitive girl of puberty, while Sepia seems to better in the experienced, hardened

Symptoms worse,- COLD, AIR, morning & evening. After first sleep. Ascending. Washing cloths, coitus, before thunderstorm, pregnancy, before menses. BETTER- VIOLENT MOTION, pressure, crossing or drawing limb up. After sleep & warmth.

PSORA-MOTHER OF NON-VENEREAL DISEASES 15/12/2008

          A man who cannot believe in God cannot become a homoeopath.

                                                                                       ( Kent-Lesser Writings, p. 671)

Master Hahnemann emphasized more and more in his later  writings  the   most important  factor  both  in initiating  and in maintaining disease is probably the presence in the tissues of     poisons, “miasms” as  he called them, toxins as we would say today. He postulated   three  main  miasms as causal in initiating  and prolonging disease states. These he named Psora, Sycosis, and Syphilis, then as now a widespread human scourge and responsible for a variety of disease manifestations.

   The word Psora is derived from the Hebrew” Tsorat” and   Greek  “Psora” means  a groove,   a fault, a pollution, a stigma. Psora ,especially related to congestive states and cutaneous manifestation.  Psora was the most ancient and insidious miasm, and that it was derived from skin eruptions of various  types in the past, such as scabies (Itch), leprosy and psoriasis. Psora was the most prevent evil even  during the era of Hahnemann. Hahnemann portrayed detail characteristics of Psora miasm and its Treatment on his CHRONIC DISEASES in more than 110 pages whereas only 9 pages were spent for venereal traits (7 for syphilis and 2 for sycosis).  Hahnemann held that all non-venereal chronic diseases are Psora.

       “ Psora is that most ancient, most universal, most destruction, and yet most misapprehended chronic miasmatic disease which for many thousands of years has disfigured and tortured mankind, and which during the last centuries has become the mother of all thousands of incredibly various chronic (non-venereal) diseases, by which the whole civilized human race on the inhabited globe is being more and more afflicted.”[Chronic Diseases, p.9]

Psora-spreads very easily by any form of physical contact like shaking of hands, touch of the garments, formites, exposures etc. Dr. Hahnemann states that …..all miasma of the itch, being most contagious of all chronic miasms need only a touch to the general skins, especially with tender children, for its transfer. It is communicated so easily, that even the physician, hurrying from one patient to another, in feeling the pulse has unconsciously inoculated other patients with it. Even newborn babies can receive the infection while passing through the organs of the mother or through the “infected” hands of the midwife.

   Master discover the most appropriate description of Psora and described it as an original disease condition…which does after the completion of the internal infection of the whole organism as a result of the affliction of an ITCH MITE, announced by peculiar cutaneous eruption consisting of vesicles accompanied by intolerable voluptuous itching…… . Also states….” this primary, non-localized, non-venereal disease condition evolves under different circumstances and concomitant factors in to multifarious diseased processes which go by different names….”

Kent, in his Lectures, then greatly enlarged upon the theory, proposing that Psora was the foundation of all other illness, without which mankind would be pure and healthy both in mind and body, as in the Garden of Eden.

       “The body become corrupt because man’s interior will become corrupt.”[Lesser Writings, p. 681]

         Psora is the evolution of the state of man’s will, the ultimate’s of sin.”[ibid, p. 654]

The Itch is looked upon as a disgraceful affair; so is everything that has a similar correspondence; because the   

Itch in itself has a correspondence with adultery……”[ibid, p.137]

Psora is the beginning of all physical sickness…is the underlying and is the primary disorder of the human  

race.[ibid, p.126]

  I think from above quotes that Kent took a very puritanical and moral line about the origins of disease within the human race and he apparently felt that Psora was equivalent to ORIGINAL SIN or the FALL OF MAN.

 

   

 

 

 

 

PRIMARY MANIFESTATIONS OF PSORA-

 

·   The vesicular eruptions on the webs of fingers and flexural areas accompanied intolerable    

   voluptuous tickling. Itching, they feel better by lying down, scratching, and followed by burning.

·   Can be constantly hungry with a desire for hot foods.

·   They have a tendency to have an unkept appearance.

·   The primary manifestations of Psora are self-limiting and along with the death of the itch mite it also    

   becomes  dormant.

 

LATENT PHASE OF PSORA-[Slumbering]

 

        When the primary manifestations of Psora are suppressed by local applications, the local vesicular  

   eruptions,voluptuous itching  disappear  but  Psoric  stigma  may  remain dormant but its presence is  

   expressive by  mentally, physically as well as spiritually.

·   They are mentally alert and quick; easily fatigued both physically and mentally.

·   Feel bottled up inside unable to express oneself.

·   Depressed, can not concentrate.

·   Worry. They are highly susceptible to catch cold.

·   Dry unhealthy skin.

 

SECONDARY SYMPTOMS OF PSORA-

 

  As a result of excitement of the slumbering Psora  (latent psora) due to some exciting or maintaining   

factor, the indwelling Psoric evil is reflected on any or all the three planes, spiritual, mentally and  

physically, and produced following secondary manifestations of Psora-

         •Mind of Psora is hypersensitive & hyperactive. Hence called Sensitizing miasm.Being sensitizing  

          miasm psora  produces almost no structural change but mainly functional disorders, manifested by  

          hypersensitivity, itching irritation, burning, utmost up to congestion and inflammation. 

         •It produces functional disturbances in all organs of Ectodermal  origin viz; skin, CNS, Nerves, bones,

  periosteum and serous membranes like peritoneum, pleura etc.

•Intelligent, indifferent, apprehensive, over sensitive, timid, reserved, restless, easily exhausted,  

  anxiety and fear of criticism. They can be stubborn, independent, and afraid to take chances and I 

  inhibited.

          •They may worry a lot about money even though they have plenty of it.

·   Burning and dryness all over skin, mouth, lips, eyes, etc. Hands and feet burn flushes of heat.

·   Itching, skin dry, unwashed appearing with numerous eruptions. They feel better laying down,  

   scratching.

·   They may be highly susceptible to bad news, shock or fear, fear of death; those with generally  

   negative  personalities or beliefs or unusual beliefs about food, food allergies, growth problems, mal-

   assimilation due to deficiency disorders like calcium, iron, potassium, etc.

 •Weakness memory indicates psoric. (forgetfulness-Syphilitic & absent-minded – Sycotic tendency).

·   Other symptoms include nausea, headache, colitis, ringing and roaring in ears and muscle spasms.

·   Psoric heart diseases are mostly functional, remember it, so they will be accompanied with much  

  anxiety, mental distress, with palpitation and neuralgia, often of a sharp, piercing, cutting & stitching  

  nature; worse least movement, at night.(Robert,H.A.).

 • Burnt taste is ONLY psoric.

·   Aversion to Acids and sour.(during fever).

·   Desire for sugar, sweet, Cabbage, Hot food, indigestible things esp. during fevers etc. Psora desire  

   hot foods;  syphilis prefers cold food; sycosis wants the food either hot or cold. Psora desires meats,  

  but the combination of psora & syphilis, in the tubercular diathesis, has an aversion to meats.

 SOME IMPORTANT POINTS-

1.Fear-manifested as anxiety is psoric, manifested as anguish is syphilitic & when manifested as outward expression is sycotic.

2.Bradycardia is psoric , irregular pulse syphilitic & tachycardia is sycotic.

3.Psora is characterized by deficiency, various forms of inhibition- “ in lacks, in weakness, in inferiority complex, in coldness, in all that LIMITS the individual’s expression & given his signs & symptoms a bluish hue.” (Ortega, P.S)

4.All pains of psora are generally of neuralgic type. (Bone pain indicates syphilis & joint pain is indication of sycosis).Sore, bruised & pressive pains are psoric.(Burning, bursting & tearing pains are syphilitic, & stitching, pulsating & wandering pains indicate sycosis).

5.Psora malignancies are prone to develop after the age of 40 years. (Syphilitic malignancies develop at the age of 40 years & malignancies of Sycotic can develop at any age)

6.Blue, the cold colours correspond to Psora. (Yellow, the loud colour to Sycosis,& red, to Syphilis).- (Ortega, P.S)

7.All ‘hypos’ are mainly Psoric .Dyses are Syphilitic & ‘hyper are Sycotic.

8.Modalities-

(a)    Aggravation- Standing, heat of room, after eating, new moon, approach of menses, sunrise to sunset, suppression of skin disease & discharges. After sleep etc.

(b)   Amelioration- Walking, lying down & being quit slow movement, heat, weeping, reappearance of skin disease & natural discharges.

 

ANTIPSORIC REMEDIES-

               Hahnemann suggests chief psoric remedies include  Natrum mur, Cal carb, Ars alb, Lyco, Phosphorus, Mezereum, Graphite, Causticum, Hep sulph, Petroleum, Silicia, Zinc and  Psorinum  amongst may others.
